Portrait Peter Abt

In my early years, a colleague of my father’s gave me an electric guitar as a gift. The part was of very poor quality and difficult to play. Nevertheless, with the use of my parents tube radio, I was fascinated by this instrument. In my later teen years I bought a serious guitar and an amplifier with the money I had earned during my vacations. Soon I was playing in a youthful band. At the age of 23 I had successfully completed my engineering degree, then changed to IT professionally and made a career across different companies all the way up to management. I have been playing guitar with several breaks both theoretically and practically until today.

In 2017 I decided to buy a semi acoustic guitar. During the evaluation and research I learned that there are many good ideas, but which are not or only partially available in standard guitars. My requirements for my new guitar continued to grow. Independently of this, as an engineer I had often wished, in contrast to computer science, to develop a product that one could «take in one’s hand» with enthusiasm. Suddenly these two streams came together, on the one hand the wish to develop an own product and on the other hand a new high quality semi acoustic guitar, which combines as much as possible all the good ideas of the guitar world. This laid the foundation for the development of a new guitar with the goal of producing it in small series.

Now started the well-founded build-up of know-how on topics such as tonewoods, vibration theory, glues, moisture monitoring, varnishes and treatments, multimensur, headless, truss rod, compound radius, frets, neck shapes, neck joints, intonation correction, inlays, hardware and its surface coating, pickups, electronics, weight, balance, CAD modeling, NC machining, etc.

Regarding the design, at first, like many other guitar builders, I was probably seduced by the well-known shapes. However, I came to the conclusion that it made no sense to manufacture another copy. So I decided to create my own design.

The first step was to create a clearly documented specification with the goal of best sound, best playability and highest Swiss quality. The guitar should inspire and fascinate.

The detailed development, construction and manufacturing of two prototypes took 3 years.

On 29.3.2020 the first prototype of the Capricorn was born. After a detailed test phase of the Capricorn No. 1, basically 3 optimizations were documented for realization. On 30.4.2021 the optimized prototype Capricorn No. 2 was available. The following test phase by partly prominent musicians could best be described with enthusiasm regarding sound, playability and quality. My goal had been achieved and from that point on nothing stood in the way of a production in small series.
